By the end of the week, I had the paperwork drawn up for Beatrice to sign. I’d hoped that after she saw that I wasn’t playing with her, she would decide not to move away but she didn’t. She cried a little as she signed all the paperwork, and one of my associates notarized it.

She left town promising the girls that she would be back for all their important events. I seriously doubted that she was going to be back and forth like that, but I hoped that she would for the girls’ sake.

“Good job, Adam!” Morris cheered.

I had been attending my swim classes with Morris every week. I thought I would miss a couple of classes due to my schedule, but it had all worked out.

Adam was one of the kids in my swim class. Adam had taken to the water like a guppy. It was very true that kids had significantly less trepidation than adults. We’d mastered breathing underwater, blowing bubbles, and floating using the floatation devices. The front float technique was easy to learn compared to the back float. The back float was difficult because I felt like I didn’t have any control over where I was going. Once I learned to relax, I enjoyed floating.

Adam was the first student to try some of the techniques we’d learned in the deep end. All of the previous lessons had been done in the shallow end. I watched all the kids in the class go before me. Each one of them was successful in swimming out to meet Morris. We cheered as each child swam to their goal.

I kept telling myself that I wasn’t going to let some kids upstage me. If they could do it, then I could too. The problem was relaying that message from my mind to my body. To say that I was scared was an understatement.

I had confidence that Morris wouldn’t let anything happen to me, but that didn’t stop me from being scared dennamug.

“Alright, Cam, it’s your turn,” Morris smiled.

“Okay,” I replied nervously.

Morris moved closer to me and said, “You know you can do this, right? You succeed at everything you put your mind to. This water will be no different.”

He looked me in the eyes to make sure I’d received his message.

“Okay,” I nodded my head.

“Now, swim to me and take this noddle,” Morris said.

I’d done it several times in the shallow end, so I knew I could do it. I just had to remember the mechanics and relax.

I looked at Morris and then at the noddle. I shook off the nervousness, tented my hands in front of me, and pushed off from the wall. My legs and arms moved in concert until I saw that full beard in front of me. After swimming close enough, I reached out and grabbed the noddle.

All of the kids in the class cheered for me. Morris smiled. I was proud.

“You did great today,” Morris said after all of the children left the pool area.

“I had fun today.
